FAQ:
What does it cost to participate? R7,500 per crew.
Why do entries close on 30 April? It takes a lot of planning to run an event of this scale and we need to prepare in advance. We may consider late entries at our discretion, however you will likely miss out on the shirts, hats and other goodies.
How is my handicap calculated? We prefer new entrants to fly a ‘speed test’ of ~20 minutes with one of our officials. They will help you set up your aircraft and determine your handicap speed. This will take place on Thursday 28 May. Please keep an eye out as we will contact you to confirm the details.
Do I need to fly full power? No, we can arrange alternate options that would be comfortable for you and your aircraft- please get in touch for more info.
Can I show up on the day? If you would like to fly in, please ensure that you are on the ground and parked before 9AM each morning. Departures are only available after all competitors are in the air or have returned and are at our safety officers discretion.
Why do I need to be a member to participate? We are a membership based organisation run entirely by volunteers. We rely on membership fees to keep the organisation running and directly support event logistics, safety oversight, and community initiatives — helping us keep the experience world-class. Members also enjoy priority access, discounted rates, and exclusive opportunities — including training sessions, networking events, and recognition programs so renew yours today https://www.aeroclub.org.za/member-renewals-and-new-memberships/
I am a member of EAA or some other ARO. Does that count? No, unfotunately not. We do not get any support from other AROs in the running of this event. However, if you renew using the Aeroclub system, we do offer discounts for dual memberships.
What does my fee include? Your fee includes shirts, maps, number stickers for your aircraft, trophies and medals for the lucky winners and much more.
Where does the money go? We typically cannot cover the event cost through entry fees alone. To support the event, we are offering great marketing opportunities where you can elevate your brand in front of a captive audience both at the event, and through media coverage after. Please consider supporting us. Any amount will be welcomed. Reach out if you would like to find out more.
How can I support pilots and events? The best support you can provide is keep your membership up to date and to join us at an event, even if you can’t fly in the event itself. Share photos and spread the good vibes as far as you can.
Can I join if I don’t have an aircraft? We always need volunteers, supporters and cheerleaders to help create a successful event and a fun vibe. If you are lucky- there may be a pilot in need of a navigator.
As a non profit, volunteer run organisation, we rely on members support and participation to be successful. We do it for the love of aviation and our members. Please join us at events, let us know what is working, what we can improve and where you would like to see us next.
