The objective is to fly the route in the shortest time possible against your handicap speed, which is unique to you and your aircraft. The route is given to you before take off and there is no plotting required. The route is approximately 120nm.
Scoring is best speed against the your declared handicap speed, but flying accurately will help as the more you wander off course, the longer the route will take you to complete.
Before your flight, you will receive two maps and a set of turn point photos. The map will contain a pre-plotted route with magnetic headings. The turn point photos are in line of flight and are clearly marked features.

FAQ:
What does it cost to participate? R1,500. SAPFA members get 15% discount so sign up today and get your entry for only R1,275.
How is my handicap calculated? We prefer new entrants to fly a 'speed test' of ~20 minutes with one of our officials. They will help you set up your aircraft and determine your handicap speed. If you are unable to do so before the next event, we have data from hundreds of aircraft in South Africa of all types and can determine a handicap that you are comfortable with.
Do I need to fly full power? No, we can arrange alternate options that would be comfortable for you and your aircraft- please get in touch for more info.
Can I show up on the day? You can but we prefer that you enter at least 5 days before the event so that we can prepare for your arrival. We can't guarantee that we can accommodate you if you don't enter beforehand.
Do I need to be a member to participate? No, you can participate as a non-member but you lose out on our great benefits like discounted entry fees. Non-member entry fees will include day membership. Please consider renewing your SA Power Flying membership at https://www.aeroclub.org.za/member-renewals-and-new-memberships/
How can I support pilots and events? The best support you can provide is keep your membership up to date and to join us at an event, even if you can't fly in the event itself. We also welcome sponsorship as we cannot cover the event costs through entry fees alone. Reach out if you would like to find out more.
What does my fee include? Your fee includes maps, number stickers for your aircraft, trophies and certificates for the lucky winners.
Where does the sponsorship go? We rely on sponsors as we cannot cover the event costs through entry fees alone. Sponsors help us cover travel costs for our volunteers, printing, prizes, etc. In return, we provide great marketing opportunities where you can elevate your brand in front of a captive audience both at the event, and through media coverage after. Please consider supporting us. Any amount will be welcomed.
Can I join if I don't have an aircraft? We always need volunteers, supporters and cheerleaders to help create a successful event and a fun vibe. If you are lucky- there may be a pilot in need of a navigator.
As a non profit, volunteer run organisation, we rely on members support and participation to be successful. We do it for the love of aviation and our members. Please join us at events, let us know what is working, what we can improve and where you would like to see us next.
